Time Difference Calculator Instruction Manual

Time Difference Calculator is a program that performs a variety of calculations. For example, if you give it a start date and time (e.g., 2:35 PM on Dec. 12, 2007) and an end date and time, it can calculate the exact amount of time between those times. It will express the time difference both as days, minutes, and hours, and as pure hours (e.g., 27 hours) and minutes. You can also give it a start date and time and an amount of time (expressed either as days, hours and minutes or as pure hours and minutes), and Time Difference Calculator can tell you what the exact date and time will be when this time period has passed. You can also give it an ending time and date and a period of time, and Time Difference Calculator can tell you the time and date in the past before that time period.

Using Time Difference Calculator

When you run Time Difference Calculator, you will see a screen full of controls and input boxes. Although these may seem confusing at first, they are really quite simple if you take a minute to familiarize yourself with them. For your particular needs, you may only use a few of the functions provided by Time Difference Calculator.

Calculating the amount of time between two times

In order to calculate the amount of time between two times, you need to provide the start date/time and the end date/time. Normally, you would provide a start date and time and an end date and time. To do this, you would fill in all the text boxes in the "Start date and time" and "End date and time" frames. However, if the times are both on the same date, you can just fill in the time boxes.

You can input the dates in any normal date format, such as "Dec. 10, 2007" or "12/10/07". If you do not input a valid date format, the program will inform you and abort the calculation. You can also select a date from a dropdown list by clicking on the down arrow beside either date box and clicking on a date from the list. You can input the time in any normal time format, such as "2:00 PM" or "14:00" (military time).

You can automatically fill in either the start date/time or end date/time by clicking on the Now button within the frame. You can clear either the start or end time boxes easily by clicking on the Clear button within that frame. You can clear all boxes by clicking on the Clear button at the bottom of the screen.

In order to calculate the amount of time between two times, the boxes in the lower two frames must be empty. You can empty these boxes by clicking on the Clear button within the "Time difference in hours and minutes" frame. You can also clear these boxes by clicking on the Clear button at the bottom of the screen, although that will clear ALL boxes.

Once you have input all the information (start date and time), click on the Calculate button. The time between the start date/time and end date/time will be displayed in the lower two frames. The "Time difference in hours and minutes" frame will show the elapsed time entirely in hours and minutes. The "Time difference in days, hours and minutes" frame will show the time expressed in days, hours, and minutes if the time is over 24 hours.

Calculating an End date/time

If you know the start time and the amount of time you want to elapse, you can use Time Difference Calculator to calculate the end time. To do this, fill in the start time and date. Then fill in an elapsed time by filling in EITHER the boxes in the "Time difference in hours and minutes" frame or the "Time difference in days, hours and minutes" frame. It is not necessary to do both. It is up to you which one to use, depending on whether you have the time you want to elapse expressed as days, hours, and minutes or entirely as hours and minutes.

Once you have input the start date/time and desired elapse time, click on the Calculate button. The end time will appear within the second frame. Note that these boxes must be empty for this to work, so if they are not, click on the Clear button in the second frame to clear these boxes.

Calculating a Start date/time

If you know the end time and the amount of time that has elapsed, you can use Time Difference Calculator to calculate the start time. To do this, fill in the end time and date.

Once you have input the end date/time and desired elapse time, click on the Calculate button. The start time will appear within the top frame. Note that these boxes must be empty for this to work, so if they are not, click on the Clear button in the top frame to clear these boxes.

Printing the results

If you want to have a printout of the calculation you have just done, you can click on the Print button. (This button is only enabled once a calculation has been done.) Time Difference Calculator will display a screen that lets you input a comment. This comment will appear at the top of the printout of your results. Inputting a comment is optional. Click on the OK button when you are finished inputting the comment. Time Difference Calculator will then print a sheet giving your input data and results, plus the comment. You can abort the printing by clicking on the Cancel button (or pressing the Esc key on your keyboard) when the comment screen is displayed.

Saving the results to a file

You can maintain an ongoing file of your calculations. Once you have performed a calculation, click on the Save button. A screen will come up asking you what file name to save the information under. You can type a new file name in the text box, or click on an existing file from the list to automatically put that name in the text box. Once a name is in the text box, click on the OK button. You can cancel saving a calculation to a file by clicking on the Cancel button on the file name form.

If you use an existing file name, the new calculation information will be appended to the end of the file. This allows you to maintain a list of transactions in one file. For example, if the file was about a person, you could save all the calculations about that person in a file with that person's name.

Once you have selected the file name and clicked on the OK button, you will see the comment screen. This allows you to input a comment to be saved with the calculation data. Input a comment and click on the OK button to proceed to save the calculation and comment in the file. You can cancel saving a calculation to a file by clicking on the Cancel button on the comment form.

Viewing and printing a file

If you have saved calculation information on a file, you can view the file by clicking on the File menu on the main Time Difference Calculator screen and then on the View/Print File option. This will display a screen that lets you pick which file to view. Select a file from the list and then click on the OK button. You will then see a screen that displays the file text. You can maximize this screen or change the size by placing the mouse cursor on any edge of the screen and pressing the left mouse button and moving the mouse once the mouse cursor changes to a two-headed arrow.

You can print the file text by clicking on the Print button on the "View Report Form" screen. Be sure your printer is turned on and has paper before you click on this button.

When you have finished viewing or printing the report, click on the Close button to return to the main Time Difference Calculator screen.

Uninstalling Time Difference Calculator

If, after trying Time Difference Calculator, you decide that you do not want to keep it, exit Time Difference Calculator by clicking on Files/Exit if it is currently running. Then open the Windows Control Panel and select Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features (depending on which Windows operating system you have). Select Time Difference Calculator and follow the standard uninstall procedure for your computer. This will totally remove Time Difference Calculator from your computer.
